Outdoor Furniture Taren Point Celebrates 50 Years with “Baa-bara” Sheep

Outdoor Furniture Taren Point, a longstanding family-owned business, is commemorating a remarkable milestone of 50 years in operation with a festive celebration that includes a free barbecue and various novelties. Founded by Greg Donnelly in 1974, the enterprise initially took root in the backyard of his parents’ residence in Oyster Bay, where he crafted outdoor tables and chairs from red cedar. Over the decades, the business has flourished, expanding its product range and establishing a prominent presence in the furniture industry.

Greg, alongside his dedicated wife Debra, has devoted endless hours to the business, navigating challenges and competing with industry giants while simultaneously nurturing their family. Their children – Melanie, Jai, Corrin, and Kimberley – have all played integral roles in the business, embodying a true family endeavor. With ten grandchildren in tow, the Donnellys have built a legacy rooted in hard work and a commitment to excellence.

A distinctive feature of Outdoor Furniture Taren Point is its beloved life-like sheep, affectionately named “Baa-bara,” which has graced the storefront for approximately three decades. This iconic sheep, often adorned in themed attire for special occasions like Christmas and Anzac Day, has become a cherished symbol in the local community. Even during the challenges posed by the pandemic, “Baa-bara” remained a source of joy, sporting a mask in solidarity with health guidelines.

The whimsical escapades surrounding “Baa-bara” include instances of theft, with the sheep mysteriously vanishing only to reappear in unexpected locations. Despite these lighthearted incidents, the sheep remains an enduring emblem of the business’s spirit and resilience. Greg’s entrepreneurial journey began humbly, as a young carpenter exploring opportunities to supplement his income. Recognizing the burgeoning demand for outdoor furniture, he seized the moment, initially promoting his handcrafted pieces through local advertisements.

As the business gained momentum, Greg transitioned to larger premises, relocating to Peakhurst before eventually settling at the current site in Taren Point. Debra attributes the longevity of their enterprise to the invaluable relationships cultivated with customers over the years. Their commitment to customer satisfaction and personalized service has been instrumental in sustaining the business through five decades of operation. Looking ahead, the next generation, represented by Jai, stands poised to carry the torch forward when Greg and Debra eventually decide to retire.

The narrative of Outdoor Furniture Taren Point encapsulates not just a business success story but a testament to resilience, creativity, and enduring family values. Through dedication, innovation, and a deep-seated connection to the community, the Donnelly family has etched a lasting legacy that continues to thrive and inspire.
