With the completion of eight kilometers of duplicated track between Cranbourne and Dandenong, trains now run more frequently, enhancing commuter convenience. The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has prioritized sustainability by seeking innovative ways to repurpose trees that could not be preserved during construction. Partnering with Treasuring Our Trees, a community organization dedicated to salvaging timber for reuse in educational and community projects, LXRP is fostering a culture of resource conservation and recycling.
Founder of Treasuring Our Trees, David Ferrier, spearheaded initiatives to rescue fallen trees following severe storms in 2021. The collaboration with LXRP marks a new chapter in repurposing materials, with a focus on sustainability and community engagement.
The repurposed timber will be used to create indoor and outdoor furniture for Melbourne schools and community projects participating in the Treasuring Our Trees program. This initiative not only promotes environmental stewardship but also provides valuable learning opportunities for children on the importance of resource conservation.
Mr. Ferrier emphasized the commitment to sustainability and the potential uses of the salvaged wood, ranging from furniture to yarning circles and kitchen gardens. Treasuring Our Trees has established partnerships with schools and community projects, aiming to showcase the creativity of local artists through the utilization of natural resources.
Through a meticulous recording process, every donated log is cataloged to track its journey from donation to final project completion. Treasuring Our Trees recently inaugurated a showroom and educational hub in Lilydale, showcasing works by local artists inspired by LXRP’s donations and storm-rescued trees. Amidst the level crossing removal project, over 2.54 million trees, plants, and shrubs have been planted, underscoring a holistic approach to infrastructure development that prioritizes environmental sustainability.
