Victoria’s Cranbourne Line Upgrade has brought significant improvements, including increased train frequency, elimination of dangerous level crossings, and the construction of a new station at Merinda Park. As part of the project’s sustainability efforts, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has found a unique way to repurpose trees that were unable to be preserved during construction.
The salvaged timber will now be repurposed into indoor and outdoor furniture, as well as wood sculptures for various educational institutions and community projects across Melbourne. This initiative is made possible through a partnership between LXRP and Treasuring Our Trees, a community organization established in 2021 with a mission to rescue timber for reuse in schools and community initiatives.
David Ferrier, the founder of Treasuring Our Trees, expressed his commitment to salvaging timber and repurposing it for educational and artistic purposes. The organization’s initial focus was on collecting fallen trees in areas affected by severe storms in June 2021, such as the Dandenong and Yarra ranges.
Mr. Ferrier commended the LXRP team for their sustainability focus and their decision to partner with Treasuring Our Trees. The repurposed wood from the project will be utilized in various applications, including cabinets, tables, outdoor furniture, yarning circles, and kitchen gardens.
In addition to agreements with 20 primary schools and kindergartens in outer-east Melbourne, Treasuring Our Trees is expanding its reach by engaging with secondary schools to raise awareness about sustainability. The organization also has over 20 community projects underway, aiming to support local artists by providing them with natural resources to work with.
Moreover, as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project, more than 2.54 million trees, plants, and shrubs have been planted, contributing to environmental sustainability and green infrastructure development in the region.
Through the collaboration between LXRP and Treasuring Our Trees, a positive impact is being made not only in repurposing timber for beneficial use but also in promoting sustainability education and supporting local artists. This innovative approach to sustainability underscores the importance of resource conservation and community engagement in infrastructure projects.
